It breaks my heart that such a peaceful true hearted woman has to endure yet another difficult challenge. She has been told that the best chance of fighting the cancer which has now spread to her liver, lungs and omentum area ( lower lymphnoids ) is to try chemo.

The chemo treatments were to begin on May 5th. However another complication has risen which needs to be addressed immediately. So please keep my mother in your prayers. She really needs them!

I appologize for such a late and short message, and promise to keep everyone better infomed by the middle of next month.

In closing, I thought this quote was quite profound. "May you never forget what is worth remembering or remember what is best forgotten" (unknown).

Until next month, take care and remember; the answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love&Light to all,

Michael

MICHAEL'S MONTHLY MESSAGE - MARCH 2010

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters,

Welcome to my monthly message for March 2010!

I now understand a little of the mystery behind the World of Disney. What a place! When they say, "magic kingdom" they definitely mean magical. At first, for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what was so special about Disney World and why everyone who goes there says its so special. But on the way home as I sat on the plane taking it all in, it struck me that everyone at Disney seems to be happy. I didn’t see any crying children and most of the adults seem to be happy too. Maybe it’s because the adults can actually forget about the stress and frustration of the world for a short moment in time? Regardless of what it is, that place definitely is magical! I recommend if you are ever given the chance to go, take advantage of the opportunity; because you won’t regret it. Some moments are breathtaking like the parade and fireworks.

Also, besides Kelley making this dream come true which was one of the best times for me in a long time, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that a good friend of mine (Terry) would be driving up from Sarasota with her friend, Ellen to meet us at Disney World. It just so happens that Ellen's niece works for Disney World so she was able to take us around and get us some special deals including getting one of us into the park for free. So a special thanks to Janice. I could go on and on about all the great things we did, but the bottom line is: Disney World truly is a magical place. Heck, the world would be a much more peaceful place if we could tap into our inner “Disney”.

On a different note, I know the world is moving at a fast pace, but when it comes to traffic--OMG! Yeah, "oh my god" as the kids would say. In my daily travels on and off cape to do some work, I've noticed some of the driving manners with people are crazy. I'm totally amazed that there are not more accidents. When you think about it, there are so many minds working simultaneously about the same thing execpt everyone has a different action for the perception they are viewing at that given moment. Don’t even get me started about who thought it would be a great idea to have a rotary with multiple entrances. Then, if that’s not bad enough, someone thought it would be a great idea to take a rotary and put it at the bottom of a bridge! Is it me or is that crazy? People merging on, people merging off, people going around its almost like playing a game of hot potato. If that’s not asking for someone to get into an accident, I don’t know what is. However, I shouldn’t complain; because the mere fact I can drive is a blessing. I will admit it can be overwhelming at times especially after being away from it for so long. As the old saying goes," we need to take time to smell the roses."

Well I hope everyone enjoyed St. Patrick's Day and if you are Irish remembered to wear green (my favorite color). Also, spring is here so keep an eye out for all the plant life in bloom. Remember it’s important to enjoy nature whenever you get the chance. Don’t take it for granted like I did.

In closing, I want to thank everyone once again for helping me get used to living life as a free man. I am extremely grateful for all your prayers too. Also, thank you to Pam, Donald, Diane, and Jim and Kelley for making it possible to buy a used truck. This would not have been possible without you.

There is no movie recommendation this month, because I haven’t had time to go to the movies; but I do look forward to seeing "Clash of the Titans" when I get the chance. Also, I look forward to watching some “oldies but goodies” with Kelley's children starting with Harry Potter.

My profound statement is: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away". (anonymous)

Until next month, take care and remember; "The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences".

Love & Light to all,
Michael

Michael O'Laughlin's Monthly Message - February 2010

Dear family, friends & supporters:

Welcome to my monthly message for February 2010.

It’s been a long time but boy is it nice to feel true freedom again. I have to admit, I definitely took my freedom for granted. It’s probably the closest in comparability to taking your health for granted. Sometimes we don’t realize how good we have it until it’s gone. I know I will never take anything for granted again. And now when good things do happen in my life I will look at it as a bonus instead of an expectation.

After reading the latest article in the Berkshire Eagle I wasn’t surprised by the District Attorney’s comments; that’s who he is and he needs lots of prayer. However I was surprised by some of the comments on the Berkshire Eagle’s website in reference to the article. I was sad to learn how strong some people still feel. For anyone to think I was guilty based on the information they received from past papers and gossip and not the actual facts of what happened is sad. The level of ignorance for some to make such a strong decision and carry so much resentment was shocking. Then to go as far as saying my new girlfriend Kelley better look out because she will end up the next victim is just down right pathetic. Yeah, I'm convinced some people have some deep rooted issues that will hopefully be resolved later in their life. Bottom line is people who know me know that I'm innocent. For those of you who don’t-- remember GOD see’s all!

Personally, I believe peoples lives are too complicated with the things of the world and definitely to fast which partially explains why a lot of their frustration is guided in the wrong direction. Heck, now that I'm free I don’t even have enough time to get the things done that I need to get done in a day. How crazy is that? Time is extremely precious and that’s why kids always express wanting to spend time with their parents. I really believe you can equate "time" with "love". It seems the more time you spend with someone the stronger the bond and eventually the feeling of love evolves. It’s kind of cool when you think about it.

This brings me to the point I wanted to share with all of you about feeling blessed. Besides the overwhelming support & prayers from everyone which by the way is tremendous. I have been invited by Kelley and her daughters to go with them to Disney World. That is an unbelievable gift and act of kindness. So yes, after nine years of being in prison if someone says, "Michael you just received your freedom what are you going to do?" I can now say, "I'm going to Disney World!" I wish I could go with my daughters too but unfortunately that’s not an option. I have to work on reconnecting with them first and then the joy will follow. For now, I have to be thankful for the wonderful gift I have been given and be extremely grateful for Kelley and her daughters coming into my life. It will be nice to share next month about my journey to Disney World because I've never been. But I'm still a kid at heart like so many of us so I’m looking forward to having lots of fun.

To those of you who sent gift cards for tools---thank you so much! I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness and it definitely helped. It’s going to take a while to get back on my feet but this time I am going to enjoy every minute of it and not take one breath for granted. Plus the tools have already helped with some small jobs and a big "thank you" to Belinda & Emory for getting me started with my first project. Also, if there is anyone who needs work done please let me know.

My movie recommendation is: "Avatar". I saw the movie with my mom who is doing much better and getting a little stronger by the day. I liked the movie so much that I took Kelley and her daughters the following week. The movie is a great film and based on a very simple principle---love. Love of the earth, love of the trees, love of the plants, love of the animals, love of the people, love of everything. It’s timely that James Cameron decided to show us what the Native Americans have been trying to show us for hundreds of years. Hopefully, we will get this simple but powerful message and start to change.

My profound quote is: "to your enemy give, forgiveness, to an opponent, tolerance, to a friend, your heart, to a customer, service, to all, charity, to a child, a good example, to yourself, respect." (Oren Arnold)

Until next month, take care and remember; "the answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences."

Love & Light to all,
Michael O'Laughlin

Michael Monthly Message - January 2010

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my monthly message for 2010!

Wow, what an unbelievable example of Divine Intervention! Finally, I am writing this monthly message as a free man. After nine long years of living a horrible experience I can now say, "It is over." And to think, my case had to make it all the way to the United States Supreme Court before I could finally be free.

To be honest with everyone, it still hasn't sunk in yet. It is hard to hear, "You are free" and feel the freedom instantly. The only way I can explain it is if you think back to a memory of letting a pet go after it has been held captive. Or, if you remember watching an animal program when they finally release the animal, bird, or fish into the wild it seems that the animal is sometimes reluctant or stunned at first. But freedom is of course very accepting and definitely easy to remember.

Also, I know that I wasn't mending a wing or healing an injury before being released back into the world which is probably more wild than what the animals have to deal with. But, I do want to share with everyone that making it through this experience wouldn't have been possible without the love and support of all of you. And yes even though I have a strong spiritual background I can truly appreciate everyone who came into my life. I will never forget everyone's true love, kindness and thoughtfulness.

Now, it's going to be a slow process of rebuilding my life but this time I will not take anything or anyone for granted. I have truly been blessed with a wonderful opportunity to start my life over. I can't wait to see my Dad and Aunt after nine long years; and eventually I hope to reunite with my daughters so they can finally hear the truth about everything that took place. Of course, it will be a slow and delicate process with my daughters but they have the right to know how much I love them and hopefully some part of their heart will want to reunite with me.

As far as my mom goes, thank you so much for all your prayers. She is getting stronger by the day and it’s really nice to see her getting back some of her strength--what a miracle! Although it is hard to feel so much joy when there has been so much destruction in Haiti. Please try to help them if you have the means or at least try to remember them in prayer. They too, are going to have to start over as well.

I want to thank all of you for your donations over the years and someday I plan on reimbursing everyone. However, I do have one more request seeing as someone sold every possession I owned, including all my tools that I acquired over 18 years. It would be most helpful if anyone could send a donation or gift card from Sears, so I can start up my building business again. I know it sounds crazy but tools are extremely expensive even used tools. With every ones help I will be able to start working on some small projects. A few people have already requested my services. It will be nice to finally start making a living and stop relying on everyone. Thank You!

Two quick shout outs. One is to my oldest daughter--Happy Birthday! And the second is to Dick Blanchard; thank you for all your diligence and serious devotion to my cause. The Lord truly blessed me when you came into my life and what an awesome website!

My movie recommendation is "The Mission" with Jeremy Irons, Robert Denaro and Iaam Neeson. This movie explains forgiveness on a scale that I didn’t think was possible. But, I'm glad I watched it because it helped me realize that even though it was hard to forgive D.A Capeless and some of the others who thought I was guilty, ultimately it was the right thing to do. Plain and simple there really is no greater power than love or forgiveness. And speaking of love, I will share more about the subject of love and my new girlfriend Kelley in next month’s message.

My profound quote was sent to me by my good friend Terry. "Forgiveness is primarily for our own sake, so that we no longer carry the burden of resentment. but to forgive does not mean we will allow injustice again.” (Jack Kornfield)

Sorry for the late monthly message. Until next month take care and remember; "The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences."

Love & Light to all,

Michael O'Laughlin

Berkshire Eagle Article - Michael O"Laughlin a Free Man

Article in the Berkshire Eagle about Michael's freedom. Sadly District Attorney David Capeless still doesn't get it. As expected he still refuses, after all these years that he made a mistake. How sad that the man has such an inflated ego that he can't admit his mistake. It is prosecutors like him that our justice system needs to be rid of. Mr. Capeless is to be prayed for and pitied.
.
www.berkshireeagle.com/ci_14234949

Dick

Justice finally served

Today, January 19, 2010 will go down as one of the happiest days in Michael's life; for it was today the U.S. Supreme Court denied the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Writ of Certiorari thus letting the First Circuit Court of Appeals ruling stand.

After nine long years this nightmare is finally over, and Michael is a free man. This is a case that never should have been prosecuted and it is such injustice that an innocent man had to spend nine years in the prime of his life for a crime he never committed. During this ordeal Michael even lost his two daughters which is one of the tragedies of this case; hopefully they will reconnect with Michael and find out what a loving and caring Father he is. Michael's case represents what happens when a prosecutor cares more about his conviction record that finding justice. I have spent eight years working on Michael's case. I took the case thinking he was probably guilty, but after reading and studying every piece of evidence, discovery, photos and transcripts I knew beyond any doubt whatsoever that Michael was innocent and couldn't have possibly committed this crime. The police and prosecution choose Michael as their suspect, even when they had a more viable suspect and built a story to fit their suspect. They had absolutely no physical evidence whatsoever and the prosecutor even stated this in his opening statement to the jury. What he did was build a case on circumstantial evidence based on inference after inference after inference but nothing that could tie Michael to the crime scene and show his guilt. Fortunately the Massachusetts Court of Appeals, The First Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court saw through this deception and freed Michael.

You will hear over the next few days, weeks and months some people stating the Courts got it wrong and Michael is guilty, don't believe them. These people will state their misguided opinions without having any factual knowledge of the case and without reading or studying anything about Michael's case. The courts got it right, justice was finally served, and Michael was freed because he was innocent and always has been.

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and support during the past eight years. You have no idea how much they meant to Michael and how they helped him through this terrible ordeal. And yes your prayers and support kept me going and let me work on this case even though I knew the tremendous odds of overturning a wrongful conviction. Let's pray that Michael's landmark decision will help other wrongfully convicted prisoners get their fair shot in the federal courts so they too can find justice.

God bless you,

Dick

9 year nightmare finally over - Michael freed

Today, January 19, 2010 will go down as one of the happiest days in Michael's life. This did not happen. The new date for conference is this Friday, January 15, 2010 with a decision by the court scheduled next Monday (1/18/10). There are two other cases in front of the court that are nearly the same as Michael's case and both of these cases are scheduled for the same conference on January 15th, so I would expect a decision from the court to accept or deny Michael's case on the 18th. We are hoping and praying they do not take Michael's case. If that is the ruling Michael will be a free man which is the only just decision there is.

This week I ask for your prayers and maybe some extra prayers for Michael.

I'll keep you updated on this blog and the web site.

God bless you!

Dick

Michael O'Laughlin's Monthly Message - December 2009

Family, Friends & Supporters,

Welcome to my monthly message for December 2009.

Finally, my mother and Harry are home! What a journey this has been. I found myself in another situation where I received an education in an area about which I knew nothing (health care). I have to admit, I really do feel sorry for everyone who has to deal with a serious health problem and doesn't have insurance or doesn't have an advocate to help them while they are in the hospital. It is a tough situation that requires a lot of strength and patience.

For now, I am grateful to be at home with my mom, Harry and Karley (the German shepherd) my new BFF. Hopefully, someday soon, I will be able to express my gratitude to all of you who lent your support and helped me get through this challenge. On some level, I think the Lord and all the Angels knew I couldn't do it alone.

At the present moment, I'm a little down because I still haven't seen my daughters to let them know how much I love them. So I'm sorry for the unusually short message this month. Most recently, the Federal District judge just denied another request for me to have curfew so I could receive medical attention, see my dad and aunt, and talk with my close friend, Diane B. who is like a 2nd mother to me. The judge's decision is completlely unreasonable, because he is punishing me for being innocent. However, I guess there is a spiritual lesson in there somewhere.

Anyways, I need to snap out of it, because there is no need to play the victim's role in this. By the grace of God, I was able to help my mom through her ordeal and be there for my step father as best I could. Isn't that the Christmas spirit-to be able to help others? Even though I would be there-no matter what-regardless if it wasn't Christmas. Plus, I ended up meeting some very lovely nurses in the process. And yes, I have a new-found respect for nurses, because it takes a special person to commit to that role. Doctors, on the other hand-well let's just say, I'm working on it.

To all of you who continue to keep me in prayer, I would appreciate a special prayer on January 8th. That is the day my case is scheduled for conference in the U.S. Supreme Court. They will then decide whether ot not to take my case. This has been weighing heavily on my heart along with everything else. I would like to be there for my mom in the future; but if the court rules otherwise, then I must go back to prison. I believe the determining factor will be everyone staying positive, especially me. Who knows, maybe there will be a great ending to this saga.

In closing, I saw a really nice quote on the wall of the rehabilitation center where my mother was staying so I will share it with all of you. "IT IS NOT THE LENGTH OF LIFE, BUT THE DEPTH OF LIFE" (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Yes, that one made me stop and evaluate the depth of my life for a moment.

Okay, well I wish everyone lots of love this holiday season and may everyone be blessed with great opportunity in the up-coming year. If for some reason, I missed sending you a Christmas card ot thanking you for something you sent me, I truly apologize, because that is not my intention. I think the Dalai Lama says it best: "COMPASSION IS THE WISH FOR ANOTHER TO BE FREE FROM SUFFERING; LOVE IS WANTING THEM TO HAVE HAPPINESS." As I siad lots of love to everyone!

Until next month, take care and remember, "the answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences."

LOVE & LIGHT TO ALL
Michael O'Laughlin

November 2009 Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for November 2009!

Where do I start? Okay, most of you know by now that my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive uterine cancer in October. What should have been a normal hysterectomy surgery and then home for rehab and TLC turned into a nightmare with her getting a serious blood infection that settled on a heart valve and slowly became a life and death situation. She was admitted on November 1st and is still there 17 days later. Although there is some good news and that is they were able to treat the infection, and she received the surgery which was very successful. I hope to have her home in the near future so please keep her in your prayers. Also, please keep her husband, Harry in your prayers as well as he, too, is in the hospital.

Yes, in my wildest dreams I never though my case would get reversed, and I would be sitting in my mother’s home writing this message. However, I definitely never thought I would be at home and my mother and Harry would both be in the hospital. This just shows you life is full of surprises, and we need to make the best of the present moment.

The Lord says you will never be tested more than what you can actually handle. However, sometimes it seems we are tested beyond our limits. Fortunately, it is truly amazing how in the moment we think all is lost – some people see your time of desperate need and are moved by the spirit to lend a helping hand. Not only does my mom have some wonderful friends, but I realized I, too, have some truly great people in my life. Words will never express my level of gratitude to Pam, Barbara and Phil, and Liz for going so far out of your way to help me. You guys have been outstanding! In addition, I was blessed with the opportunity to finally bond with my step sister, Beth through this whole ordeal. She is a wonderful individual with the biggest heart, and it was so nice to see her show unconditional love to my mom – especially during a difficult time for her as well.

One thing is for sure, during my nine years in prison I had plenty of time to reflect about all my bad decisions and misgivings. It was an important lesson for me to learn that I have to keep my ego in check when taking things in life for granted. All in all, I’m glad I learned that important lesson, because I feel it was necessary with helping me to prepare for some of the challenges I would be facing. Another important thing I want to mention is I would never have made it this far without everyone’s love and support. The Lord has blessed me with some truly wonderful people, and I believe that was just another one of God’s gifts to me so I could cope with this temporary dilemma. Heck, the fact the Judge allowed me to visit my mom in the Rhode Island Hospital was a miracle in itself. So, yes I am extremely grateful to everyone even if I haven’t mentioned your name in this message.

Here’s a quick story I want to share with everyone and maybe you can relate to my story with your own life. My mom’s and Harry’s garden was filled with weeds that were about three feet tall, and they wanted to know if I could dig them up and turn the soil. I thought “no problem” especially after I took care of all the roots and vines entangled with the shrubs out front. Well, as the hours went by, and I dug and dug and pulled and ripped, I couldn’t believe all the roots. There were so many! Some were the size of a pencil while others were as thick as a soda can which required an ax for removal. It seemed the more I dug, the more roots there were. After the first day of total exhaustion and realizing I barely made it half way, I was now more determined than ever to finish the following day. No, I was not looking forward to another day of root pulling and digging! However, at the end of the second day as I graded the beautiful rich soil like when you frost a cake, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. It didn’t really hit me how strong this feeling was until I compared it with my life. In a spiritual sense or setting, I realized I had pulled all the old roots up in my life. I was starting new and starting fresh – and it does feel good especially when your heart is in the right place and you are trying to do the right thing. The power of intention is amazing!

I know this is a month of Thanksgiving and even though I will be alone without family, my heart is so grateful for everything I have been blessed with. Plus, I feel like this will be a great opportunity for me, my mom, and Harry to start new, start fresh, and look forward to the journey that is ahead especially the day I re-unite with my own daughters. As they say, “with God – all things are possible”. So yes, I’m going to keep the faith that all things will work out.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone for your kindness and generous gifts on my birthday. That was very thoughtful! Plus, I hope Liz, my mom, and Dave all had a wish come true on their birthdays this month.

My movie recommendation is “The Proposal”. It stars Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Craig Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, and the pleasant Betty White. To say it best – this simply is a really good movie everyone can enjoy.

My profound quote is: “Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish”. (John Quincy Adams). A good friend of my mother’s – Nicole, sent this quote to her, and as I was reading it to my mother for inspiration and inner strength, I realized I have to use it because it is quite appropriate.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Until next month, take care and remember: “The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love & Light to All

Michael

October 2009 Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for October 2009!

Well – I have been out of prison for a little more than a month now, and I must say being free is awesome. Although I am still under “house arrest” which kind of sucks; it is definitely better than being in prison. Plus, I don’t think I could have it much better than what I have at the present moment. My mother and step father have been treating me like royalty. Their German shepherd puppy - which is a year old - has more energy and love than one person can absorb. So, I have definitely been blessed. In addition, I have been working around the house and in the yard staining their picket fence and trying to keep busy. Also, it has been really nice receiving visits from Dick, Barbara, Phil, Pam, and Liz.

Hopefully, the judge will allow my request to modify my release conditions to a curfew. Then, I can start to live my life like a person who is actually free. I should know by the end of this month.

I want to thank everyone for being so kind and thoughtful with sending clothes, cards, and letters. There have been some really generous people helping me start over and some who have always been there with love and support through prayer. Thank you so much! I can’t forget to give a special “shout-out” to Ralph in Oregon. You have been truly a thoughtful and kind “long distance” friend. Thank you and Happy Belated Birthday!

Okay, it is important I remind everyone this month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So please try and be conscientious about this issue. If there is anything extra you can do – please try and make the effort. Remember – think PINK even though orange is the traditional color for October.

It is hard to believe it has been nine years since I got to carve a pumpkin for Halloween. I used to carve them with my daughters, but I look forward to carving a pumpkin with my mom this year. I’m going to try and stay away from eating too much candy, and it will be fun seeing all the “trick or treaters”.

Sorry this month’s message is short. In closing, I know it is easy to take for granted looking at nature each and every day. However, I hope everyone will take an extra moment to appreciate the beauty of the foliage this month. It is supposed to be spectacular due to the sunny days and cold nights. It is just another one of God’s miracles.

Also before I end, I want to wish my Dad a Happy Birthday, and I hope to see you soon. Last but not least, to my good friend, Diane B., I miss you so much and I am sorry we haven’t been able to talk or see one another. Our time will come. I will always remember your love and support, and know we will see each other soon.

My movie recommendations will get better now that I don’t have any restrictions, and my cousin, Pam was kind enough to give me a gift for free rentals from Netflix. However, this month’s recommendation is “Disturbia” which is an action thriller that is not that great. However, I thought it would be appropriate for those of you who want to know what it is like to be under “house arrest”, and have to wear an electronic bracelet. The main star is Shia LaBeouf (Transformers), and he definitely played the role perfectly. Most of you will enjoy this movie.

My profound quote is: “The present moment is the field on which the game of life happens”. (Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth).

Until next month, take care and remember; “The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and Light to All,

Michael

Michael’s Monthly Message for September 2009

Dear Family, Friends & Supporters:

If you don’t believe in miracles, I can now attest that they do happen. In case you have not heard----I am a free man! Yes, I was released on September 1, 2009, and I must say words cannot express my gratitude to everyone who believed in my innocence. It’s been a long road and although there are some unnecessary conditions I must abide to; it’s absolutely unbelievable to be free again.

Normally, I would talk about current events or other trivial things that have happened in prison. But this month, I want to share two very different experiences that affected me so greatly, that I can honestly say I will never forget the month of August and September 1, 2009.

My first experience starting in early August was one of betrayal. I have heard about it, and even talked to people who have personally experienced it, but the old saying that you can’t truly understand what someone has gone through until you yourself have experienced it seems to be quite accurate. I was actually betrayed by someone I loved for and spent fourteen years of my life with. The pain was so great that I thru my back out like never before, I thought for a moment someone had stabbed me in the back, and I guess on a spiritual level someone did. Anyways, I learned that betrayal definitely hurts, especially when it’s from a loved one. I also learned that the only thing you can do for those individuals is forgive them. I now understand when you forgive someone it’s not so much for them as it is for you. That’s why it’s important to pray for them after you forgive them. So, for all of you who have been as unfortunate as me to feel the full force of betrayal all the way to the center of your heart, remember you have to forgive them otherwise your memories and trying to understand their actions will haunt you for the rest of your life.

Okay, my second experience was feeling what it’s like to be truly loved. Yes it was experiencing both sides of the spectrum, and I know “love” is almost the complete opposite of betrayal but what a wonderful experience to be truly loved. I felt so much love from family; friends and supporters that it made me realize that people are inherently good by nature.

I want to start by giving a big shout-out of gratitude to Dick for starting, running and maintaining that incredible website. In addition I want to thank Dick, Barbara and Phil for being at the U.S. Court House in Boston. It was so nice to see you guys sitting there supporting my release. Also big thanks to my lawyers Mr. Seiger, Ms Douglass and Ms. Trainor. Yeah, who would have thought my case from little Berkshire County would make it to the United States Supreme Court. I definitely have to give a big thanks to Justice Stephen Breyer who ordered my bail even while he was in the middle of Senator Ted Kennedy’s funeral. Also, a special thanks to the justices of the First Circuit Court of Appeals who wrote my decision which ultimately led to my freedom. And, to my special friends Diane B., her brother and Liz B. who helped my Mother and her husband raise my bail. Also, thanks to Barbara and my second cousin Pam for buying clothes. That was really nice because I walked out of prison with only the clothes on my back and nothing else.

But most importantly, I want to thank my Mother. I’m sure you have all heard the saying, “There’s nothing like a Mother’s love.” Well, I was blessed with witnessing it first hand during my nine years of incarceration. I was so proud of her when the judge asked my Mother to come forward and sit with my lawyer and me as he read the conditions of my release. I know she was happy when I was born and happy during some of the other accomplishments in my life. But rest assured nothing will ever compare to the true feeling of joy she felt when the judge explained to her that he was releasing me into her custody. The long hard battle had finally come to an end. We finally crossed the finish line! Although there is still one more hurdle (The U.S. Supreme Court’s final decision) for the high court of our land to reverse the First Circuit’s decision after what Justice Breyer in his final opinion on August 26th indicated, it would be like taking the trophy away from someone after they won an event. Who knows maybe the Attorney General won’t file a petition for certiorari? Yeah, I know wishful thinking. For now I’m just going to pray that this chapter of my life is over. I look forward to what God has in store for my future, and I will never forget this miracle. For it was truly “Divine Intervention.”

In closing, I want to say this experience has given me a different perspective on life. I hope to show my growth and what I’ve learned from the pain of this experience. Also, to those of you who don’t believe in my innocence or outright betrayed me, whether you want it or not---I forgive you.

Alright, what good would this message be without my famous movie recommendation and profound statement? Most movies don’t make me cry and maybe it just happens to be where I am in my life at the moment. But my movie recommendation is: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. All I can say is whoever wrote the script for this movie understands the gift of life. This is a must see!

My profound statement brings me almost full circle to when I started writing these messages. “Some lessons cannot be taught they must be lived to be learned: (ELEKTRA)

Until next month, take care and remember; “The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.”

Love & Light to All
Michael

Michael released on bail by order of U.S. Supreme Court

September 1, 2009: After nearly 9 long years spent in prison for a crime he did not commit Michael O'Laughlin was released today on bail. Michael was due to be released August 24th by mandate of the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals but the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts filed any emergency motion with the US Supreme Court to stay the mandate and keep Michael in prison. Associate Justice Stephen Breyer of the Supreme Court denied the Attorney General's motion and ordered Michael to be released with bail (see court order: http://www.freemichaelnow.com/JUstice_Breyer_amended_order.pdf). Although this doesn't mean Michael is freed it does mean he can get out of prison and spend time with family and friends. The Commonwealth can and most likely will file a petition for writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court to overturn the not guilty verdict of an 8-1 decision by the First Circuit Court of Appeals. There is a very strong possibility the Supreme Court will deny the Commonwealth's petition; at that time Michael will be released from bail and freed from the remaining 41 years of his sentence for wrongful conviction. We are so thankful and most grateful for Michael's legal team who have worked so diligently on Michael's behalf. Overturning a wrongful conviction is next to impossible; sadly it happens so infrequently, but with your prayers and never ending support this day has become a reality, and I can't begin to thank you enough.

Michael will be staying with his Mother on Cape Cod. If you wish to send Michael cards and letters please email me (dickleb@aol.cm) for his address, and I will gladly send it to you.

Once again thank you so very, very much for your prayers, your support and your belief in Michael's innocence; it helped kept Michael spirits up during his time in prison.

God bless you,
Dick

Michael's Monthly Message for August 2009

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for August 2009!

Well, it seems I have been blessed with good news for this month. The En Banc Petition filed by the Attorney General’s Office has been denied. This is good news for getting me one step closer to my freedom. Although, I must admit, I was very disappointed to learn one Judge (Sandra Lynch) wrote a deplorable 20 page dissent. I guess someone had to be the “Devil’s Advocate” and support the abnormal, misleading thinking of David Capeless.

Also, it should be a “no brainer” that Martha Coakley (Attorney General) will now petition the United States Supreme Court. Let’s hope the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t even entertain their petition. Otherwise, it could get very ugly, because you never know how those judges are going to rule. They seem to be very inconsistent lately, and they are sticking together as a party. This means the Democrats are siding with Democrats and the Republicans are siding with Republicans. Regardless of what happens, I will say this: my journey of late has been exhausting emotionally, mentally, and physically. I’m ready for this to be over with and to start my life again. This whole experience has been quite an education, and I plan on sharing what I’ve learned so that it might help someone else.

For now, I must try and stay positive, and who knows – maybe Martha Coakley won’t petition the U.S. Supreme Court. Yeah, I know wishful thinking, but you never know – miracles do happen.

Speaking of miracles, wasn’t that an awesome feeling watching the true happiness of the two American journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee being reunited with their families after being held prisoners in North Korea. I have to admit, I had tears of joy in my eyes when I saw Euna Lee embrace her four year old daughter. Dr. Wayne Dyer says that the person who observes an act of true kindness and love can actually feel more from the experience than the ones who are partaking in the event. Supposedly, it has to do with a chemical that is released in the brain. To me, it almost seems impossible, but I guess on some level, it’s very possible – especially when we witness events with our own children’s happiness. Isn’t it weird how young children just trigger something in us that we want to see them be happy. It must be their natural purity and innocence that our inner self or spirit sees. Then it connects or brings our subconscious mind back to a place where we relate to true happiness and love. Okay, I know I’m rambling on, but I guarantee you will remember what I’m saying the next time you see a commercial with children or you have the luxury of witnessing it first hand with your own children. There really is no explanation for why children are so awesome – they are just precious!

Speaking of children, I miss my daughters like crazy. I was hoping I would be out before I lose my parental rights, but it looks like that’s not going to happen especially if the Attorney General goes to the U.S. Supreme Court. That will tie up another six months. Oh well, I just hope they know I love them and miss them very much.

Before I forget, I want to thank EVERYONE for your continued support and positive energy. I have received so many letters telling me that: “you will be free, just hang in there”. You have no idea how much all that inspiration helps. I want to send a special thanks out to my new friends, Douglas and Joanne. You guys have no idea how grateful I am for you coming into my life – both spiritually and inspirationally. Yes, I definitely have been blessed with everyone’s love and support – Thank You!

Last but not least, I want to wish Dick Blanchard a wonderful and Happy Birthday this month. I’m not sure if everyone knows, but Dick’s dedication and loyalty to my cause has been unparalleled. He works extremely hard on the website and keeps everyone updated and informed on all fronts concerning my case and life. Like I have said before - he is a true angel in disguise. I am so grateful he is in my life – Happy Birthday – Dick!

My movie recommendation is: “Knowing” with Nicholas Cage. It is basically a sci-fi thriller, but it is action packed with an unusual story line and ending. I enjoyed it very much, and I think many of you will like it too.

My profound statement is: “Vivere Senza Rimpianti” which means “To Live Without Regrets”.

Until next month, take care and remember; “The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and Light to All

Michael O’Laughlin

En Banc hearing denied

Hi Everyone,

I have wonderful news. The US First Circuit Court of Appeals has denied the Commonwealth of Massachusetts appeal for an En Banc hearing. This means that the decision by the 3-judge panel that reversed Michael's conviction on June 11, 2009 remains intact. The only option left for the Commonwealth is for the Attorney Generals office to file a petition for writ of cert to the US Supreme Court, and we believe they will. We expect the Commonwealth will move to stay the order (keeping Michael in prison) while the writ of cert to the US Supreme Court is pending. Michael's lawyer will file a motion for release and try to obtain bail for Michael so he can be released from prison. There is no guarantee this motion for bail will be granted but we are hopeful. I will keep you posted as further events occur.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers and support; they certainly have helped, and Michael remains forever grateful to all of you.

Read court's denial of En Banc hearing!

God bless you,
Dick

Michael O'Laughlin's Monthly Message - July 2009

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for July 2009!

This month is the two-year anniversary of me writing these Monthly Messages. Part of me can’t believe two years has gone by, and part of me remembers every agonizing minute. However, this month, I have some good news to report. The United States Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit reversed my conviction, and said I am innocent. It’s a pretty big deal in the world of justice, because the 1st Circuit very seldom grants Habeas relief in a criminal conviction. Although, I can’t get too excited because at the request of D.A. Capeless, the Attorney General has filed a petition En Banc, in hopes that the remaining judges will disagree with the decision by the panel and reinstate my conviction. Only time will tell if personal politics goes all the way up to the Federal Court of Appeals. Regardless of that fact, I will always be grateful for the judges who saw through the corruption and applied the law correctly to uphold the truth. There are not many who have the integrity to do that. Plus, I believe this never would have happened without “divine intervention”.

Now comes the hard part – waiting. I was so surprised by this decision that I have been an emotional wreck since my lawyer told me on the morning of June 11, 2009. Hopefully, the next bit of good news I receive is that the court denies the Attorney General’s petition for the En Banc hearing. Then, I would only have one hurdle left which would be the United States Supreme Court. I never thought in a million years my case would become this exciting.

Another thing I know to be true is none of this would be possible without all of your prayers. I want to thank everyone so much for keeping me in your prayers and sending out positive energy all these years. I will never forget everyone’s dedication, and I will be forever grateful. Please keep praying!

Every July brings a “bit of special celebration” for me and that’s because it is my youngest daughter’s birthday. Happy Birthday! I love you! Most of you don’t realize that the decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals (if it stands) has another bonus feature. I will be able to keep my parental rights as a father! Yeah, pretty amazing timing. Otherwise, I will lose my parental rights too. By the way, those of you who sent me Father’s Day cards, bless your heart – that was extremely thoughtful.

Okay, turning to food for a moment. I know, who would have thought my conversation would turn to food, but I have on another episode of “Spain on the Road Again” on PBS with Gwyneth Paltrow, Claudia Bassols, Mario Bateli, and a New York food critic named Pittman. The way they enjoy food (without having been in prison) has given me a new found respect for people who truly enjoy food. What a blessing it will be if I’m given the chance to eat food that is real and healthy again. I know one thing – I will never take anything for granted again, and I’m not just talking about my freedom or food either.

On a sad note, Farrah Fawcett didn’t win her battle against cancer. It seems the old saying about celebrities passing on in “threes” seems to be true since we lost Ed McMahon and Michael Jackson too. Let’s remember their families in our prayers.

My movie recommendation is actually somewhat current. The prison gave us a newly released movie for the Fourth of July. It was called “Taken” with Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, and Katie Cassidy. If you like non-stop action, this movie is unbelievable. Also, I think every seventeen year old girl should have to watch this movie. This really happens in the world, and they need to be aware of it. Even though most fathers like myself would give their life for their daughter. We don’t all have the talents or abilities Liam Neeson portrayed in the movie. I think this movie will make young girls think twice about running off to spring break or disobeying their parents when they want to go out of the country. Sometimes the truth hurts.

My profound statement is very simple but true: “The mind authenticates words, but the heart translates love”. (Valentine)

Until next month, remember: “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and Light to All

Michael

Attorney General seeks to reverse "flawed" decision

Coakley seeks to reverse ‘flawed’ decision

Updated: 07/09/2009 11:59:13 PM EDT

By Jack Dew
Berkshire Eagle Staff

LEE -- The attorney general is seeking to keep Michael O’Laughlin, convicted of beating a Lee woman nearly to death in 2000 but exonerated last month by a federal court, behind bars.

State Attorney General Martha Coakley has asked all six judges of the First Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the three-judge opinion that concluded there was insufficient evidence to justify the jury’s guilty verdict.

Calling the three judges’ decision "fundamentally flawed," the attorney general argued in a petition to the First Circuit that the jury was presented ample -- though circumstantial -- evidence to convict O’Laughlin of beating Annmarie Kotowski in her Fox Hollow apartment in the early morning of Nov. 17, 2000. If the full panel of judges agrees with the prosecution, O’Laughlin’s verdict and sentence would be reinstated.

The attorney general’s request was filed on June 30. The court has not yet responded; it can grant the hearing -- known as an "en banc" review -- or deny it. If it denies the appeal, the state’s last resort would be to ask the Supreme Court to hear the case.

Meanwhile, O’Laughlin, 41, remains in prison. His attorney, Kenneth I. Seiger, said he has filed a request for bail but does not expect the court to act until it has responded to the attorney general’s appeal.

O’Laughlin, formerly of Lee, was convicted in 2002 of beating Kotowski and sentenced to 35 to 50 years in state prison. His conviction was overturned by a state appeals court but then reinstated by the Supreme Judicial Court. O’Laughlin then made his successful appeal to the federal courts.

The prosecution argued that O’Laughlin was using crack cocaine on the night of Nov. 16, 2000, but ran out of drugs and money. His phone records showed a panicked series of phone calls to several drug dealers that apparently failed to yield more cocaine.

O’Laughlin worked at the Fox Hollow complex and had a master key, which the prosecution said he used to enter Kotowski’s apartment, planning to steal money to buy more drugs. But Kotowski must have awoken and O’Laughlin, scared of being caught, beat her nearly to death with an aluminum baseball bat, shattering bones in her face and leaving her unable to remember the events of that night.

A neighbor heard Kotowski screaming and called the police. When officers arrived, they found O’Laughlin -- dressed in nothing but boxer shorts -- outside by a dumpster, where he said he had heard a trapped animal. The police left, and Kotowski wasn’t found until the morning.

Investigators found a baseball bat with O’Laughlin’s name on the handle in the woods about 25 yards from the crime scene, but they found no physical evidence that definitively tied that bat, or O’Laughlin, to the beating.

The defense argued that the absence of physical evidence was significant. Though Kotowski’s bedroom was covered in blood, none was found on O’Laughlin, in his apartment, on the bat or anywhere else. And while O’Laughlin’s motive was supposedly robbery, nothing was taken from Kotowski’s apartment, including jewelry that was sitting in plain sight and more than $500 in cash.

The defense argued that Kotowski’s estranged husband, David, was a better suspect: He had recently learned that his wife was having an affair with another man. The couple separated before the attack and, five days before the assault, Annmarie began discussing divorce.

Officers searched David’s car and found towels matching those in his wife’s apartment, reeking of bleach. The prosecution, however, said police thoroughly investigated David and cleared him.

Now, the attorney general is arguing that the appeals court misinterpreted the evidence and the law, setting a troubling precedent that would deprive juries of their due deference.

By dismissing the motive and concluding that the savage beating was inconsistent with a perpetrator seeking money, the judges exceeded their authority, deciding matters that must be left to a jury, the attorney general said.

Among their many mistakes, the attorney general wrote, the judges tried to minimize the significance of O’Laughlin’s master key and ignored the telephone records that proved O’Laughlin was awake in his apartment just moments before the crime. The upstairs neighbor who called police said he did not hear a car enter or leave the apartment complex until the officers arrived.

"The totality of the circumstantial evidence supported a reasonable inference that O’Laughlin entered the victim’s apartment using his master key in search of money to buy drugs, and, in the process, he awakened the victim and beat her with a baseball bat to subdue her," the attorney general wrote.

To reach Jack Dew:
jdew@berkshireeagle.com
(413) 496-6241

Berkshire Record Story of Michael's Reversal

There was a front page story of the June 19, 2009 edition of The Berkshire Record. This was the night before the decision from the first circuit court was announced reversing his conviction.

Dick

June 11, 2009

Dear Inner Child:

I see that you are still very sad. Is there any way I can help? I really miss the old you. Do you remember how full of life you were? I'm sorry you experienced some really difficult times, but you did have some good times too. Over the years there have been many who have tried to cheer you up and it's quite apparent that it was to no avail.

Inner child, I can't emphasize how important it is for you to break free from the depression you're in and realize it could be worse. You must be grateful for what you have and stop dwelling in the past and try to enjoy the present moment. Otherwise, it will eventually start affecting your health.

What if I were to tell you that what you are experiencing in this life is all just a lesson to make you a stronger individual. The loss you feel for your daughters and the rest of your family will be restored some day. And whether it's in this life or another you will see them again. But as sad as you are, you must never forget how loved you are, you are very special.

Please just try and remember: some lessons in life cannot be taught, they must be lived to be learned. When you are ready to talk about all that you lost and forgive those who betrayed and abandoned you, I will be here waiting with an open heart. Then, I can show you the beauty that still remains in the wonderful journey your life will bring.

Light & Love
Your External Friend
Michael

Latest Mass Lawyers Weekly Article

Here is a link to the latest article published in the Massachuettes Weekly Lawyers review. I will attempt to answer your questions as best as I can with the information currently available:

1. Has Michael been freed and released from prison? No, Michael has not been freed and is still in prison. The ruling by the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals is a big step toward releasing him from prison but it is not the final step; the Commonwealth of Massachusetts still has some options available to appeal the decision by the 3-judge panel of the 1st Circuit Court.

2. Can Michael be released on bail? Michael’s attorney has filed a motion for release with bail conditions. He hopes the court will act on the motion for bail quickly. I will keep you posted as soon as we hear any news regarding possible bail and what the conditions for bail are. Please remember there is no guarantee the court will grant bail.

3. What options are available by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to appeal the decision by the 3 judge panel of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals? 1) The Attorney General's (AG) office of Massachusetts intends to file a petition for a rehearing en banc. This means that the AG wants another hearing and decision by all the justices in the First Circuit, not just the 3 justices who decided the appeal and reversed Michael’s conviction. If the court denies the petition by the AG the decision by the 3 judge panel will stand. If the court grants the petition by the AG there will be another hearing before the full court. Obviously we don't want this because we don't want a majority of all the judges possibly taking a different view than the 3 judge panel who just reversed Michael’s conviction. We hope that the court acts quickly on whether or not to rehear the case en banc, and even more so we hope they deny the AG’s petition. 2) If the AG's petition for en banc is denied, the AG's only recourse is a petition to the US Supreme Court to reinstate Michael’s conviction. Of course we hope the US Supreme Court would deny the AG’s petition. If the court denies the AG’s petition Michael is freed from prison.

4. What if the decision by the 1st Circuit Court reverses the 3 judge panel and reinstates Michael’s conviction? Our option would be to file a petition with the US Supreme Court to reverse the 1st Circuit Court’s ruling and overturn Michael’s conviction. If the court denies Michael’s petition his conviction would stand and we would start to pursue other avenues to obtain his freedom.

5. What are we hoping for? We hope that the 1st Circuit Court and the US Supreme Court denies the petitions filed by the AG of Massachusetts and that the current ruling by the 3 judge panel of the 1st Circuit Court stands. If this happens Michael is free man.

6. Can Michael be retried for the crime he has been convicted of? According to the ruling of the 3 judge panel of the 1st Circuit Court the answer is no. If their ruling stands Michael is freed and cannot be retried for the crime.

If you have any further questions respond to this blog article by entering your questions under comments rather than sending me an email. In this way everyone has access to further questions, comments and questions.

Thanks,
Dick

Links to other articles:

Berkshire Eagle story

The Docket article

June 2009 Monthly Message

"This monthly message was written by Michael prior to the First Circuit Court of Appeals reversing his conviction"

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for June 2009!

Last month, I told everyone I would share some of what I’ve been reading in the science book called “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson. Well, I’m still reading it, because I read two other wonderful books. One is called “The Shack” by Paul Wm. Young and the other is “Only Love is Real” by Dr. Brian Weiss. By the way, if you want to read a book that will change your view on life, I highly recommend reading “The Shack” or “Only Love is Real”. They really are quite good.

Alright, you talked me into it. I guess I will have to share a small paragraph of one of the chapters I read in “A Short History of Nearly Everything”. The chapter is called “Welcome to the Solar System”, and some of you may find learning about the universe as fascinating as me. So, I think you will appreciate this. Okay, our nearest neighbor in the Cosmos is Proxima Centauri, which is part of the 3-star cluster known as Alpha Centauri, which is approximately 4.3 light years away. Now this is the interesting part: everyone wants to know if there is other life out in the universe. Well, a 1960’s professor at Cornell named Frank Drake came up with the “Drake Equation” to figure out if it is possible to have other advanced civilizations in the universe. Are you ready? Without explaining his equation in detail, even with the most conservative inputs, the number of advanced civilizations just in our own little (100 thousand light years wide) Milky Way works out to be somewhere in the millions! Isn’t that unbelievable? Unfortunately, space being as big as it is, the average distance between any two of these civilizations is reckoned to be at least 200 light years. Basically, that means even if another advanced civilization knew we were here and somehow were able to see us in their telescope, they are watching the French Revolution and people like Thomas Jefferson. Yeah, doesn’t that blow your mind? The next time you are outside during the night time, look up at the stars and remember the majority of stars you are looking at burned out millions of years ago. Yet, the light is still traveling here. Can you believe this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Cosmos?

This leads me into the story about the Hubble Telescope that was just repaired. I know some of you may feel your tax dollars could be used in a better way than spending 220 million in new instruments to repair the Hubble Telescope. However, I for one thank all of you, because I love space exploration and the more we can learn - the better. Plus, what good is it having a broken telescope floating around until 2014 when NASA puts the new James Webb telescope into orbit. I can’t wait to see pictures from that telescope!

Okay, it is time to get back to Earth. Father’s Day is this month, and although my Dad doesn’t get to read these messages, I want to wish him a Happy Father’s Day. I really wish I had spent more time with him when I had the chance, because I do love him and miss him very much. As for me, it really sucks that my chance to be a good father was taken away. Although, I guess when it comes down to it, I have no one to blame but myself. I reflect during my sleepless nights if my daughters will ever forgive me for not being there. Now that my daughters are being adopted by my ex-wife and her husband, all chances of me being the tiniest particle in their life have been extinguished. When it comes down to it, they have a father figure in their life, and I imagine they are happy so that is all that really matters. Who knows – maybe someday I’ll get to be in their life again.

I watched an important special about Farrah Faucett and her battle with cancer. I know this might sound weird, but would you all say a prayer for her. I have a new-found respect for her and the many people who are fighting cancer. After taking the Health Awareness course, I now understand how the cancer cells spread so fast throughout the body and why it is so hard to beat cancer. Let me just say it is imperative that you eat right, exercise, and keep your immune system at full strength. Then you might have a chance. Of course, there is always destiny to contend with too, but don’t get me started on that subject again.

On a different note, I want to share another example of how I don’t take anything for granted anymore – not even the little things. The other day I actually got to enjoy a piece of gum for the first time in nine years. I don’t recommend chewing the same piece for more than four hours either, but I was like a kid again for the first hour. It was Trident bubble gum, so I could blow bubbles. Yeah, I know it sounds pretty silly, but I enjoyed it.

Still no news on the decision from the Federal Court of Appeals, but I’m hoping the reason for the length of time is a good one. (Note: Michael’s June 2009 Monthly Message was written before the Federal Court of Appeals came down with their verdict in his favor.)

As I have mentioned in the past, the Department of Corrections in Massachusetts will no longer allow us to watch rated “R” movies. However, now the OCCC (the institution I’m in) has gone a step further and taken away our ability to view newly released PG-13 movies. They are claiming the local Blockbuster closed down so they can’t purchase any movie rentals. With that said, my movie recommendations may be coming to an end. Although, it probably doesn’t matter, because I’m sure most of you don’t base your decision on my recommendation anyway. However, if there is one of you who do take my recommendations seriously, here is my recommendation for this month. The movie is called “Bottle Shock”, and it is about California wines versus the famous French wines. I know it might not sound very exciting and it doesn’t have any really big celebrities in it, but I promise it is a good movie. It’s so good, you might just find yourself wanting to try a bottle of Chateau Montella.

My profound quote is “No matter how many times a story starts or repeats, it only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.” (Lost)

Until next month, take care and remember; “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and light to all,

Michael

1st Circuit Court of Appeals Reverses Michael's Conviction

Hi Everyone,

The news we have all prayed for and been anxiously awaiting as arrived. The Federal Court (1st Circuit of Appeals) has reversed Michael's conviction. Click to read the Court's decision.

I just got off the phone talking with Michael's appellate attorney and he is working on filing a motion with the district court to get Michael freed on bail.

As for any further appeals the Attorney Generals office of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has three months in which to file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court. It is unlikely the Supreme Court will take the case but one never knows. In the event the Supreme Court refuses to hear the case it's over and Michael will be a free man which as we all know is long overdue.

There will be more news forthcoming as I talk with Michael and his appellate attorney, but I just wanted to get the news out to you as quickly as possible. I will be sending out more news via this blog as I receive it.

I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and support for Michael, and I know Michael multiplies that thanks many times over.
Dick

Letter to William Paul Young, Author of The Shack

Michael wrote the following letter to William Paul Young, Author of The Shack, a truly remarkable book.

May 26, 2009

Dear Mr. Young:

This is just a quick note to let you know that after reading "The Shack" I have been enlightened to yet another level.

Since receiving The Holy Ghost in November of 1989, I have been deeply involved with my spiritual walk. And though, I often speak in tongues to my Heavenly Father, I was delighted to see someone has finally explained God, Jesus, and The Holy Ghost on terms that a child could understand. I must commend you---excellent job!

Unfortunately, I am currently serving a 35-50 year sentence in prison for something I didn't do. Regardless, I will always love God, and I would never blame him for my demise. There obviously is a good reason my path led me down this road. Also, I have passed this book on to other inmates throughout the prison so please know Mack's story will touch many more even in the darkest of places.

In closing, I want to express how grateful I am that you were able to put Mack's story into such a wonderful and heart touching book. The name of Mack's daughter "Missy" was extremely meaningful to me because I lost my first true love at sixteen who I called Missy. It felt good to cry tears of hope and love. Thank you so much for touching my life. I wish you, Mack and the rest of the family a peaceful loving journey.

Love & Light
Michael O'Laughlin W80371
OCCC
One Administration Road
Bridgewater, MA 02324
www.freemichaelnow.com

Michael's Monthly Message - May 2009

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for May 2009!

I hope everyone is doing okay and enjoying spring this year. Before I get too far ahead, I want to let everyone know that I’ve got a lot to share this month so bear with me if it gets a little long.

Okay, we can’t forget how important it is to wish all the mothers out there a wonderful Mother’s Day. To be honest, everyday should be Mother’s Day, because whether we want to admit it or not, mothers are awesome. When it comes right down to it, there is nothing more important than “love” and guess who has unconditional love all the time – yeah, mothers are amazing. This brings me to wishing my mother the best Mother’s Day ever. Happy Mother’s Day Mom! My mother has been the most consistent thing in my life. No matter how good or how bad things have been in my life, she has always been there to help. She has always known when it was time to let me go and when it was time to nurture. I was definitely blessed with a great mother in this life.

One other thing, she also has helped me spiritually throughout my entire life, and I most likely would not be as spiritually enlightened as I am if it were not for my mom. Heck, she helped influence my decision to move to Delaware with my friend John, and he introduced me to Jesus and receiving the Holy Ghost. So, that got me off to a great start. She also never forced religion or spirituality on me and let me grow and learn at my own pace. Eventually my spiritual path brought me into the lives of Judy Cali and Diane Blaszka who also helped me with trying to find my purpose. However, I wasn’t expecting the “eye opener” of being thrown in prison. But, even after the dust settled, they continued to show constant love. Diane Blaszka has been like a second mother with all her kindness and thoughtfulness over the years. She has written me every two weeks for nine years! What a blessing it has been to receive words of loving inspiration along with spiritual information every couple of weeks. So, I am pretty lucky to have such wonderful women in my life. Once again, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, and thank you to my mom and Diane for all your love and support over the years. I am forever grateful that you both are in my life.

Now, I have to give a “shout out” to my Aunt Diane this month, because her birthday is on the 17th. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Di! I have to thank her also for showing love and being supportive throughout my life. Plus, during our phone call every week, she listens to me ramble on. Normally that would not be such a big deal, but if you know me, it is quite an accomplishment. Also, I have to give thanks to her friends Terry and Marianne, because they too have shown much love and support.

Alright, I’m going to shift gears for a moment. How many of you remember the Pillsbury commercial with the little girl who clicks her heels three times and she’s home with her mom putting the pastries on the table? Yeah, okay, I’ve tried it many times, but it doesn’t work. Anyway, I wish thoughts were that powerful, but unfortunately I don’t believe our thoughts can manipulate or manifest our outcome when fate or destiny is in the equation. Here’s a question for everyone: Does being positive or negative really make a difference if the outcome of your intention is already established? Now I know there are a million arguments about why it is important to be positive. However, let me give you a couple of examples that just recently happened where the individuals not only thought the opposite would happen, but they felt it in their hearts that the result would be different or so they thought.

Remember the captain who was rescued at sea after his ship was taken by pirates off the coast of Somalia? Well, during his interview with Matt Lauer on The Morning Today Show, he said he knew in his heart that he was going to die after the third day in the life boat. That is why he attempted to escape from the pirates but failed. However, regardless of his negative thoughts and feelings – he was rescued. The other example is the owner of the horse that won The Kentucky Derby “Mine That Bird”. The owner, Leonard Blach said, “I did not have any feeling I could win The Derby with that horse”. Despite the fact his horse was a 50 to 1 odd and was near the back of the pack mid way through the race, “Mine That Bird” won by more than 6 lengths. So, both men thought and felt they did not have a chance especially against insurmountable odds. Yet, fate or our true destiny intervened. This subject always requires much debate, but I will leave you with the thought: Do we really have free will if our destiny has to happen?

In the reading department, I have been reading quite a bit - actually two books at once. I really want to share about a science book I am reading called “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson. However, that will have to wait until next month. For now, I took a break from all the spiritual books and just finished reading The Stephanie Myer Series about vampires and shape shifters. I read “Twilight”, “New Moon”, “Eclipse”, and “Breaking Dawn”. She did a really good job although I love anything to do with vampires and werewolves, I just finished watching “Twilight”, the movie which was not too bad, but I still like my favorite actress of all time (Kate Beckinsale) in the “Underworld” series. She is a vampire who falls in love with a werewolf. Although she was in “Underworld I” and “Underworld II”, she was not in the most recent “Underworld III” that was played by Rhona Mitra, another beautiful English actress.

I’m getting close to the end of this message – just hang on for a few minutes more. I was curious if anyone knew why they are scaring everyone in America with The Swine Flu when the regular flu strain that spreads through America each year is more than 20 times as dangerous. I’ve been taking a 7-week program called “Health Awareness” which primarily focuses on diseases you catch with unprotected sex. However, there is additional information about other bacteria, viruses, and funguses including some that are quite serious in a prison population like MRSA and the flesh eating bacteria. I’ve learned quite a bit about our immune system too. I must say, if you eat right, exercise, wash your hands regularly, and practice safe sex, you pretty much can stay disease free. Although, sometimes no matter how much you do, if it is meant to be (i.e. fate or destiny), there is nothing you can do. Yeah, I had to slip that in there.

Alright, I better end this message or it will be June soon. Oh, before I forget, Jewel has a new CD out called “Lullaby”, and she has a song on it called “Angel Standing By” which the vocals are phenomenal. I highly recommend it!

My movie recommendation is: “City of Angels” with Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage. I know the movie came out in 1997, but it really is an unbelievably good movie, and maybe it will help someone figure out whether we have free will or not. Personally, I believe destiny rules – but that’s me.

My profound quote is going to be a prayer that was sent to me from a good friend so I thought I would share it with everyone. “From all that dwells below the skies, let faith and hope with joy arise; let beauty, truth, and good be sung through every land, by every tongue”. (Unitarian Prayer)

Until next month, take care and remember: “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love & Light to All

Michael

April 2009 Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for April 2009!

I’m sorry for starting so many messages with news about the weather, but so far April has been one cold, sunless month. I started my jogging routine at the beginning of April, and let me tell you, it’s been miserable. It was sleeting during one of my three mile runs just a few days ago. I guess I shouldn’t complain, because it is only a matter of time before the heat gets here. It is just hard running in the rain when you have to come back in and lock up in a cell the size of a closet with another person soaking wet. Oh well, that’s prison life.

My transfer to MCI Norfolk was denied so I will be staying here at OCCC. Though there are a few good things here, they are becoming out-weighed by the growing difficulty of trying to stay out of trouble. The latest rule they want to implement is we can no longer go on any other tier to talk with another inmate or deliver a newspaper, magazine or book. This is in our own unit that we are locked in! There used to be a time where prisoners could just stay out of trouble and do their time, but not anymore – they want to punish us even more.

Alright, let me talk about something that is actually important. The earthquake that hit L’Aquila, Italy killed almost 300 people and left around 15,000 people homeless. In addition, it destroyed many ancient buildings that draw millions of tourists every year. Many of the buildings damaged in the quake dated from the Middle Ages or the Renaissance era including a famous bell tower of a 16th century Basilica. I saw one story where a dog laid on the remains of a collapsed home and rescue crews couldn’t get the dog to leave only to find days later, the owners were buried under the rubble exactly where the dog was lying. There was another story that was more hopeful when rescue workers pulled a 20 year old woman alive from a collapsed building two days after the main quake struck. That was pretty much a miracle – never mind that it was a five story building on top of her. And then, how about the 98 year old woman who was rescued from the wreckage alive and well! The only thing she wanted was her hair brush so she could brush her hair. Yeah, it seems no matter how you look at it, when it is not your time to go – it is not your time. Please keep the survivors and the families of those who died in your prayers.

Also, I know there have been a lot of unnecessary killings – like the most recent one in Binghamton, NY where a gunman killed 13 people at an immigrant community center. In addition, there have been the recent school shootings throughout our country and don’t forget the school shooting in Germany too. Believe it or not, on April 20th, it will have been ten years since the Columbine shooting in Colorado. Yeah, it is hard to comprehend, but we need to keep all of those families in our prayers as well. There was one death recently that made me realize sometimes there is nothing we can do when our time is up. I am talking about the simple skiing accident of actress Natasha Richardson who was married to the actor Liam Neeson. She was only 45 years old, and to think when Liam almost died in a severe motorcycle accident a few years earlier, she couldn’t bear the thought of raising her two sons alone. Now, she is gone and Liam is left to raise the boys without their mother. I tell you, life is tough – we never really know what challenge we will be given next.

This brings me to an individual who had to face one of the most difficult challenges anyone should ever have to endure, and he did it for us. I am talking about the Lord Jesus Christ. When you really think about it, he was murdered. When it is under the law, it is supposed to be okay. I will be thinking of Jesus during the spirit of Easter this year, especially after I read the greatest description of what it was like for Jesus to die on the cross. The name of the book is “Nearer My God” by William F. Buckley, Jr. There is a chapter called “The Crucifixion Examined”, and imagine that was written by Maria Valtorta that he quotes. I’m telling you – even the movie “The Passion of Christ” does not come close to what this woman described. It is so unbelievable; it is almost as though she was there from the first words of the chapter to the last words Jesus spoke “Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani!” Let’s not forget to personally thank Jesus for his sacrifice.

My movie recommendation is for those of you who (like me) don’t think we are worthy of a miracle. It is called “Henry Poole is Here” starring Luke Wilson. As slow of a movie as it was, I haven’t cried that hard since losing my daughters. The funny thing is after they showed the movie, I asked over fifty inmates if they watched it. Most said “no” because they thought it was an independent film and others thought it was just too slow and serious with a spiritual overtone. Even the inmates in my Bible Study Groups didn’t watch it! There wasn’t one person I could talk to about the movie. It made me think maybe the Lord played it just for me? Yeah, I know wishful thinking, but like I said, if you need a miracle but don’t feel as though you are worthy, it is a must see.

My profound statement is: “Only a life lived for others is worth living”. (Albert Einstein)

Happy Easter everyone! Until next month, take care and remember: “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and light to all,

Michael

Michael's Monthly Message - March 2009

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters

Welcome to my Monthly Message for March 2009!

It looks like March has come in like a lion and has remained a lion throughout. I’ve been shoveling some heavy snow this month, because it has been mixed with sleet and slush. I guess this comes with the territory. Regardless, I still love it.

Okay, enough about weather because I’m sure everyone is ready for spring. This reminds me of the Spring Equinox. We had a nice visit from Raven during our Saturday morning Native American Spiritual Circle Group. Raven (a Native American volunteer) usually visits once a month and always shares words of wisdom. While visiting, he told a quick, but very powerful story about a young Native American boy and the boy’s first day of school. He explained how the boy, along with the rest of the class had to stand so they could learn how to say “The Pledge of Allegiance”. The boy sat down and felt proud. He went on with the rest of his day and really felt good about his accomplishment. When the following day came, the class had to stand so they could say “The Pledge of Allegiance” again, but the Native American boy would not stand. The teacher was very concerned and came over and asked him why he would not stand to say “The Pledge of Allegiance” with the rest of the class. The boy responded with a confident, “I don’t need to”. The teacher was kind of befuddled with his response so she politely asked, “Why don’t you want to say “The Pledge of Allegiance?” He responded with a profound statement: “My word is my bond!” In other words, the fact he said it once was good enough. His family had taught him how important his word was. Therefore, it was not necessary to repeat “The Pledge of Allegiance” everyday. I liked this story, and I hope it touched some of you as well. I think we have gotten too far away from the importance of our word. I know I’ve been working very hard on keeping my word no matter what the venture. Although, I wish I had done a little better when I was still married and had a family, but it seems hindsight is always 20/20.

Speaking of marriage, did everyone hear that Tom Brady of The New England Patriots married Gisele Bundchen, the former Victoria Secret super model? It is amazing that she makes over 30 million dollars a year, and Tom Brady only makes 10 million dollars. I guess it does pay to be beautiful. I was just glad to hear that Tom’s son and his former girlfriend, Bridget Moynihan were at the wedding too. It’s more evidence that people can still be friends – kind of like Bruce Willis with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. However, I was surprised by their February 26th wedding date. I thought my wedding date of February 25th was unique, but I guess not. Probably California February dates are quite common. All in all, I hope things work out for them.

Now it is time to take a moment to thank everyone for writing such nice letters to Jack Dew at The Berkshire Eagle. It made me realize that I’m still loved very much even though sometimes I feel like I’m in the depths of Hell. Also, I wanted to let everyone know that I did not forget how thoughtful and kind everyone was for donating money to hire a private investigator. We were able to receive some valuable information, and if my decision in the Federal Courts in not favorable, the information will be helpful when filing a Rule 30 motion. I’m still hoping for Divine Intervention, and a good decision from the Federal Court.

Last but not least, I want to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day especially all you Irish folk. I want to give a special “Happy Birthday” shout out to Diane Blaszka. I hope you had a wonderful day!

My movie recommendation is: “Eagle Eye” with Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monagan, Billy Bob Thornton, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Chickless. It is definitely an adrenaline rush of action, but I don’t know how probable. Although I admit, I’m on multiple cameras at all times except for when I’m in my cell, and you guys would probably be shocked at how many cameras you are on at any given moment. It makes you think.

My profound quote is: “When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it is not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.” (Stephanie Meyer/Twilight)

Until next month, take care and remember: The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love and Light to ALL,

Michael O’Laughlin

March 2009 Monthly Message

It looks like March has come in like a lion and has remained a lion throughout. As many of you did, I watched his inauguration, and then later that night the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball. As impressive as that was, the part of his election that had the most impact on me was after he knew he had won the election on November 4th 2008. Everybody gathered in Chicago waiting to hear his victory speech. He took the stage and after the applause finally subsided, his first words into the microphone were, “In this defining moment, change has come to America”. Of course, the crowd went crazy with applause. I pulled out my note pad and wrote down what he said. I could really feel the sincere power in his statement, and I thought I might want to quote it someday.

This brings me to four days after President Obama was sworn into office. On January 24th, there was an article written about me in The Berkshire Eagle. The title was quite catchy “O’Laughlin May Get Freed Again”. Although it is not entirely accurate because even though I received a “directed verdict” from the Appeals Court (means you are innocent), I never actually stepped outside as a free man. Regardless, I was delighted that the article did not trash me with lies. Usually, anything written about my case always slams me and then leaves the reader with a feeling of, “well, he deserved what he got”. This time was different. Even though there were some incorrect facts in the article, the reader was left with a feeling of “maybe he is innocent?” Another thing about this article that pleased me was the fact that D.A. Capeless decided to lie in his quote when he commented about having discussions with the New England Innocence Project and stating that he had no problem with testing or retesting anything for DNA because he had nothing to hide. Let’s just say that could not be any further from the truth. It did remind me of President Obama’s statement except with a little twist: “In this defining moment, change has come to Berkshire County about O’Laughlin’s guilt”. Yes, I know there will always be people who believe I am guilty, but I truly believe the momentum has shifted. I am still baffled though – it always seems that it is harder for people to believe the truth than to believe a lie. Why is that?

I can’t forget that I owe a great deal of thanks to Dave Pelczarski and Dick Blanchard for making the article happen. Plus, I owe a special thanks to Barbara Cognetta for writing such a beautiful character letter about me to The Berkshire Eagle reporter, Jack Dew. That was a really nice gesture.

On a different note, I have two things to share concerning Mother Nature and all the snow she has been sending this year. First, many of you don’t know how much I love snow and the cold. One of the things I love to do after a snowfall is shovel. I’ve been offering to volunteer with shoveling since last November. They finally put me on the snow shoveling crew. When they saw how much snow I moved, they put me at the top of the list so now I shovel every snowfall. I know this probably sounds crazy to most of you, but I enjoy it very much. Secondly, I read an interesting article in Yankee Magazine about Bentley’s snowflakes. Wilson Alwyn Bentley, at the age of 19 in 1885, was the first person to successfully photograph a single snowflake. Of the more than 5,000 snowflakes he photographed, not one was exactly like any other one. That is pretty cool, and if you are ever in Jericho Village in Vermont, you should check out the Jericho Historical Society where you will be able to see the Wilson Bentley Exhibit with many of his snowflake photographs. The funny thing about me reading that article was the following day on my way to the yard, a snowflake landed on my navy blue hat so I was able to see the intricacy in the pattern of the snowflake. I must say, they really are quite astonishing.

In a quick update on my legal news, I am still waiting for the Federal Court of Appeals decision so please keep me and the judges in your prayers. Thank You! J

Okay, with regard to last month’s message, I apologize once again for venting my frustration about not seeing my children. I am sorry, but I needed to voice my feelings for my own well being. I hope none of you felt that I wished any ill will towards my ex-wife. Even though I do not agree with her actions to withhold my correspondence and gifts from my daughters (which is a violation of the Court Order), I still care about her very much, and she will always hold a special place in my heart. I just hope she finds it in her heart someday to tell the children it is time to reconnect with their father. By the way, if anyone has a picture of my daughters or any information about them, I would be forever grateful if you would send it to me. Thanks again! J

My movie recommendation is: “The Last Samurai” with Tom Cruise. Now I know what you are thinking – Tom Cruise as a Samurai? Please do not cast judgment right away. This film is truly a great movie about integrity and honor. It is one of my all-time favorites and once you see it, you will understand why they choose Tom Cruise for the role.

My profound statement is going to be a profound poem. You need to read it more than once to absorb its true power.

“Outwitted” by Edwin Markham “He drew a circle that shut me out – Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that took him in.”

I wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day. I want to tell all the men who are reading this, try and do something nice for that “special” someone in your life this Valentine’s Day.

Until next month, take care and remember: “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and Light to All

Michael

O'Laughlin May Get Freed Again - Berkshire Eagle article on Michael

The following article appeared on the front page of Saturday's (1/24) Berkshire Eagle.

O'Laughlin May Get Freed Again

By Jack Dew, Berkshire Eagle Staff
Updated: 01/24/2009 10:27:33 AM EST Saturday, January 24

Michael O'Laughlin has been convicted, freed and convicted again for beating a Lee woman nearly to death in 2000. Now, he is hoping to be freed again.

O'Laughlin, formerly of Lee, was convicted in 2002 of beating Annmarie Kotowski with a baseball bat in her apartment. That verdict was overturned by a state appeals court in 2005, which found there was insufficient evidence to support a guilty finding, but then reinstated in 2006 by the Supreme Judicial Court. He is serving a 35- to 50-year sentence in state prison.

O'Laughlin's case has now been taken up by the New England Innocence Project, a nonprofit that seeks to free innocent convicts, largely through retesting biological evidence like blood and hair. And he has filed a separate appeal seeking to overturn the Supreme Judicial Court's decision with a federal court, which heard oral arguments in September and could issue a ruling any day.

Alison Douglass, a Boston attorney with Goodwin Procter and the New England Innocence Project, said the group is still reviewing the case to determine all possible sources of biological material. The next step will be to seek tests on that evidence.

Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless said he expects the guilty verdict will be upheld in the federal appeal. Meanwhile, his office is in discussions with the New England Innocence Project.

"I don't expect there will be any difficulty (testing or retesting evidence)," Capeless said. "It really is just a matter of working out the details. There is certainly nothing about this or any other case that we would want to hide."

O'Laughlin's cause has also been taken up by a small group of supporters, who have rallied around a Web site dedicated to his case, www.freemichaelnow.com.

"There was no proof whatsoever, no evidence to substantiate that he was even at the crime scene," said Dick Blanchard, a volunteer who designed the Web site. "There was blood all over (the crime scene) yet there was nothing on him — no fingerprints, handprints, fibers, DNA — nothing. It is just remarkable."

At O'Laughlin's trial, the prosecution acknowledged that its case was built on circumstantial evidence.

Kotowski was attacked in her home at the Fox Hollow apartment complex where O'Laughlin worked and had a master key. He was using crack cocaine that night and had called several dealers for more, but had run out of money.

Capeless argued that O'Laughlin went into Kotowski's apartment to steal money but woke Kotowski, whom he then beat severely with a baseball bat and left.

The attack broke every bone in Kotowski's jaw and face and left her unable to remember that night. Her face and hands were rebuilt in a dozen operations over 18 months, but she was left with permanent nerve damage, little feeling in the left side of her face, and her hearing and eyesight were impaired. Kotowski, who was 49 at the time of the attack, was unable to return to her job as a schoolteacher.

Authorities found a baseball bat in nearby woods that had blood — and O'Laughlin's name — on it. Tests on the blood, however, were inconclusive.

The defense argued that Kotowski's estranged husband, David, had an even stronger motive to kill Kotowski.

The two were childhood sweethearts and had been married for 30 years when, in 1999, David learned his wife was having an affair, the defense said. The couple separated two months before the attack and, five days before the assault, Annmarie began discussing divorce.

Defense attorney Nathaniel Green argued that David had ready access to a baseball bat — indeed, he had once aspired to be a professional baseball player and had a large collection of baseball equipment.

When officers searched the husband's car, they found towels matching those in his wife's apartment, in a plastic bag in the trunk, reeking of bleach. The police, however, had treated the husband as a suspect but cleared him.

O'Laughlin maintained his innocence after the guilty verdict. At his sentencing, he spoke directly to Kotowski, saying, "I did not do this to you, and I do not know who did this to you. ... Someday it will come out and it will be clear who did this."

To reach Jack Dew: jdew@berkshireeagle.com (413) 496-6241

Michael's Monthly Message - January 2009

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters,

Welcome to my monthly message for January 2009!

It’s a new year and though we may be off to a tough start concerning the financial stability of our country, I think 2009 will be a good year for many.

I’m writing this message on January 9th which is a very special day for someone close to my heart. It is my oldest daughter’s 16th birthday. I want to wish her the very best on her birthday, and let her know, “I love you and miss you very much!” Some day, I hope I’m given the chance to set things straight. My dilemma of late is how to settle the confusion that eats away at my mind each and every day concerning my children. It just boggles my mind that I spent 14 years of my life with someone who I thought was my best friend, only to learn that she feels it is more important for her to never speak with me or my family again and to never let me see, speak, or write to my daughters. Who does that? Also, how is that in the best interest of the children? It’s literally as if she is pouring poison in my wound. Yeah, you could say I’m confused to say the least.

By no comparison am I going through anything close to what Jesus went through. But remember when he was on the cross dying, and he was in so much pain. It’s almost hard to fathom. All he wanted was a drink of water to quench his dying thirst. Something, anything to trick his mind into believing somehow the pain would subside. But instead, a Roman soldier had the audacity to dip a rag on the end of a pole into vinegar and press it against his lips. Nice – huh? Well, imagine with no warming, no word, no letter – you could never see, talk, or correspond with the most precious thing in your life – your children. Then, you find out the person responsible for these actions is the one you grew to love and shared the most intimate parts of your life with. Most would call this betrayal, but to me, it’s something more. At least, the Roman soldier was ignorant with his actions and didn’t share most of his life with Jesus. When someone who supposedly loved you is intentionally cruel, it brings the situation to a whole other level. Anyway, with that said, I still wish only the best for her. However, I must say that nothing has eased my pain or brought peace of mind to me.

For those of you who happen to have children, you might understand why I am so frustrated. Let me just say when my daughters were born, there was such a bond of love in my heart that it was indescribable. I witnessed such love and innocence in my daughters that their beauty left me breathless at times. I never thought in my worst nightmare that I wouldn’t be able to share my life with them. In my opinion, there is no excuse for someone to take away my children especially for the sake of convenience. Life is short enough, and we never know when our time is up. Look at what John Travolta and Kelly Preston are dealing with right now with the loss of their son, Jett.

Life is a gift from God, and we need to respect that gift on all levels. We must remember it is the time we share with one another that matters most in life, even if it is only a simple letter or phone call. It’s the sharing that makes us one. The next time you are visiting the cemetery and are respecting those who have passed on, I want you to notice something on everyone’s grave stone. Pay special attention to that little dash in between the dates of when they were born and when they died. That “dash” signifies their entire life – that small, short little dash was their whole life!

OK, I probably should apologize for dampening everyone’s spirits. I guess I’m tired of walking on broken glass, and I have to admit I struggled this year through the holidays and my daughters’ birthdays. My daughters mean everything to me, and the fact I don’t even know what they look like anymore breaks my heart. Hopefully, someday that will change, but for now, I want to thank all of you for listening to me vent some of my frustrations.

On a different note, I want to thank everyone for all of the nice Christmas cards, pictures of your families, and for the gifts. It was very thoughtful of everyone, and I will always be extremely grateful for everyone’s kindness. Even though I’m in prison, I really do appreciate everyone sharing part of your life with me.

My movie recommendation is the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight”. The Batman Series has taken on quite a serious role. Also, I know most people think that Jack Nicholson was the best “Joker”, but I really enjoyed Heath Ledger. It is too bad that Heath will no longer be with us, because he was a great actor. So, if there are any of you who somehow missed seeing this movie, I suggest you get some snacks, turn off the lights, and plan to be captivated for two and a half hours by “non-stop” action with some incredible special affects.

My profound quote is: “Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

Until next month, take care and remember: “The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences….”

Love and Light to All,

Michael

December Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for December 2008!

It’s my second Christmas here at OCCC, and I’m finally getting settled in. I just finished taking another program “Speaking Without Fear”. I was approached by the President of the program, and he asked if I would be interested in teaching the class. It’s for Toastmasters International so I told him if he needs my help, I would be more than happy to teach the class. I guess my “gift of gab” has finally paid off. Then, almost on the same day, I received more good news. No, I didn’t receive news that my case was reversed in the Federal Court yet. And No, I didn’t receive news from the Guardian-ad-litem that my daughters want to see me. That would be great news. However, I was finally given a job after eight years of trying to get one. I make a dollar a day, and I get 2 ½ good days a month off my sentence. Basically, all I do is sweep and mop a hallway at night so I really can’t complain.

All right, enough about me – let’s get to the reason everyone loves December – Christmas! Okay, I know it’s just another Christmas with buying more gifts and probably going deeper in debt when our country isn’t too financially sound at the moment. But remember, this is a time to be with children and as I have said before - watching children open their presents is priceless. Although, if you really want to make children happy, spend some quality time with them. Also, if you have a chance, try to spend some time with the elderly, because they’re really just children at heart too.

Speaking of the elderly, this reminds me of one of my favorite commercials. As crazy as it sounds, I believe this commercial expresses what true love would look like if you could actually see it without saying a word. The commercial starts with a couple in their thirties walking on a path through the park when they quickly approach an elderly couple from behind. As the younger couple goes around them and passes them, the younger woman looks back over her right shoulder and notices how content and peaceful the older couple is and sees that they are holding hands to show that they are still very much in love. At that moment while never breaking stride in their walk, the younger woman looks at her husband or boyfriend and reaches down and grabs his hand as to signify she wants that too. The camera pans down to the younger couple’s hands and you see the diamond on her finger. Then the voice over says something like “only two things last forever”. I understand they are trying to sell diamonds, but they also portrayed in a simple commercial with no words the power and beauty of love. I don’t know, maybe it’s just the hopeless romantic in me, but I enjoyed the commercial very much. Regardless of the fact I was betrayed, I still believe in true love and will always show love to another when given the chance. Maybe this Christmas we could all try to give a little extra love and attention to a special someone. Please don’t make the same mistake I did and take them for granted.

Before I end this message, I want to express my gratitude for everyone’s thoughtfulness and kindness concerning my situation. I want to take a moment to thank everyone for your love, prayers, and support. Also, thank you for all the nice Christmas cards. If you don’t receive a card from me this year, I apologize because I try to send everyone I know a Christmas card. It is my way of sending a small gift of love by showing my appreciation for remembering me. In addition, I want to thank everyone who visited me this year. A special thanks to my Mom, Pam, Barbara, and Phil for your true dedication in visiting me so often. I hope you enjoy your visits as much as I do. To Dick “the angel in disguise” – without all of your hard work, none of this would be possible. From the bottom of my heart – Thank You! To Diane Blaszka, my great friend who is like a second mother, I’m sorry we were not able to meet this year, but my heart goes out to you, and I can’t wait to see you next year. To my Mom, Dad, and Aunt, I want to say “thank you” for always loving me no matter how many mistakes I made in life. I wish you the best and I love you very much. To all of my good friends and best friend, Dave, thank you for sharing part of your life with me. I will never forget all the great times we had together. Ralph, you’re the best story teller ever – thank you!

Now for the hard part – sending a short message to my daughters who might never read this. Nonetheless, I have to say this just in case. To my daughters, I’m sorry I can’t mention you by name, but I’m not allowed to. However, I hope some day you both find it in your hearts to talk with me. For now, I want you to know that I love you from the core of my soul and even if you are mad at me or even hate me, I will always love you. I believe as you get older and understand love from a parent’s perspective you might then realize how much I have missed you and how much I love you.

This leads me into my movie recommendation which is the same as it was last year “It’s a Wonderful Life”. To anyone who has seen this movie, you would have to agree it is quite remarkable. To my daughters, I hope you take the time to watch this movie some day, because it depicts the true gift of hope and love like no other. Also, one last thing, when you watch the movie, please think of me because that’s how much I love you guys.

My profound statement is: “The ones that love us - never really leave us” (unknown).

I know this message has been long, but I want to share one last thing with everyone, and that is my favorite Christmas song. It is called “Breath of Heaven” by Amy Grant. My former best friend shared this song with me, and I promise it will be one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear. It literally brings tears to my eyes. Please check it out (Amy Grant – “Breath of Heaven”).

Well everyone, may the Lord bless you all this Christmas and throughout the New Year.

Until next month, take care and remember: The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love and Light to ALL

Michael

Merry Christmas Michael

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that Christmas can be a very lonely time for people in prison. It is bad enough for prisoners that are guilty but just try to imagine how tragic it is for people like Michael that are in prison having been wrongfully convicted.

During this holiday season when we are fortunate enough to be with family and friends let us remember Michael with a card, an entry in his Guest Book (http://www.freemichaelnow.com/), and/or a gift. If you choose to send money please remember it has to be in the form of a money order. If you plan on sending a book Michael first needs to get permission and approval of the book... If a book comes and he has not received prior approval, HE has to pay to return to sender.. Books should be ordered through http://www.amazon.com/.

Let's wish Michael a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and pray that 2009 may bring him the freedom he so justly deserves.

God Bless You,

Dick

November 2008 - Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters,

Welcome to my monthly message for November 2008!

Finally we have a new President with Barak Obama, and boy is he going to have his hands full. I really hope he can solve some of the serious concerns our country is facing. Besides history being made with our first African American as President, I think as a country we got it right this time. For now, let’s keep him and his family in our prayers so they may receive the strength that will be needed to endure the challenges ahead.

On a different note, I want to thank everyone who remembered me on my birthday, and an extra “thank you” to those who were able to send a gift. As some of you may remember, November and December used to be my favorite time of the year. Unfortunately, it has now become the most painful. However, I am grateful for the memories, and I continue to pray that some day I will receive my freedom so I can share with my children the beauty of this time of the year.

No, they still have not given me a job yet. But, I was fortunate enough to have been placed on the list for the “advanced” Alternative to Violence Program. I am so glad I was chosen, because I met some very beautiful people. If Donna, Dave, Amy or Wayne read this message, thank you so much for being a part of my life even if it was only for a weekend. What special people you all are to take time out of your busy lives to come and volunteer with prisoners. May you be blessed beyond your wildest dreams for your inspiration, dedication, and sacrifice!

On a sad note, we had another suicide this month. It is weird talking with certain individuals one minute and the next thing you know, they are no longer with us. This will make the third person I have known who committed suicide while in prison. I can’t express how many times I’ve thought of doing the same thing; but thanks to all of you and the support and love I feel from everyone, I was able to suppress those thoughts. I really do sympathize with the families who get that phone call with the news that someone they love took their own life. I guess all we can do is keep the family in our prayers and hope they can find it in their hearts to forgive him.

For those of you who know someone who has lost a family member or friend in Afghanistan or Iraq, there is a website called www.heropaintings.com. This website will instruct you on how you can have a beautiful oil base painting of the individual who lost their life. The unbelievable thing is – it is absolutely FREE! So far, they have painted over two thousand fallen service members. This is a great opportunity to show your love to someone who is suffering a tragic loss. Please check out the website. Who knows, you may help a family member to heal and then it will have been worth your time.

Also, don’t forget November is the time for thanksgiving and forgiveness. I hope everyone will try to exercise both of these to the fullest this month. If you think about it, this is the first step in making the world a better place. Oh yeah, and please try to remember it is also Native American Month.

Before I forget, I want to thank everyone for keeping me in their prayers concerning my injuries. Slowly but surely, they are healing.

Well, like I’ve said in my previous Monthly Message, because we can’t watch “R” Rated films anymore, my movie recommendations have become very limited. However, I did see a very entertaining movie this month. It was “Ironman” with Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges. Overall, it was pretty good, and if you are a Marvel Comic fan, you should really enjoy it.

My profound quote is from someone who lately seems to be extremely blessed in his life. Yet, his statement still hit home in my heart. Please take a moment to read the statement more than once so you can feel the true impact. Okay, here it is: “If you’re not living your life to make someone else’s better, then you’re wasting your time” (from Will Smith on Oprah).

I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I thank everyone once again for your loving support. Until next month, take care and remember: “the key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences”.

Love and Light to All

Michael O’Laughlin

Michael's Birthday

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder that Michael has a birthday coming up this Wednesday, November 5th. For some reason I use to think that it was curable or worst case scenario, a woman may loose a breast. But I never realized that so many women die. For all you men out there reading this; if you enjoy or appreciate the beauty of women's breasts remember the significance of raising your awareness concerning breast cancer. As men, we need to understand the severity of this situation and be more compassionate to the cause. Hopefully, someday soon there will be a cure.

On a different note, They still won't give me a job. But after eleven months I did manage to squeak loud enough to get into a program called "Alternative to Violence" although the program doesn't give any good-time. Regardless, I enjoyed the program and the people in it which was mostly Hispanic. It got very emotional near the end. One individual shared about his Mother dying a few days before the program started and another shared about losing his two year old nephew who fell out of a window three stories high in Boston about a month ago. I too shared about my building experiences and building homes for my children but explained that they don't live in these homes anymore. I try to hold on to the memories of the children playing around the house but sometimes it's just to painful. It is now five years since I have seen, heard or talked to them and even though my heart is broken it was nice to hear people share about their hardships and misfortunes. There were many in the group who have not seen their family members either. Once again it reminded me how cruel we can be to one another especially when it comes to locking people up in prison and never giving them a second chance. I really hope things change someday. There was one thing that did happen during the program that I did find interesting. It was during an exercise where we had to role play as a celebrity. As we started to think what celebrity we would be, several people told me I was John Travolta. I can't tell you how many times over the course of my life people have said I look like John Travolta, but I never thought it would be in prison. I still don't think I look like him, but I sure wish I had his life.

In financial news, my heart goes out to all of you who are really being affected by the latest stock market crash. It seems our country is in a serious mess. Just make sure everyone takes the time to vote on November 4th.

I received my oral argument transcripts from the Federal Court of Appeals and it seems the judges were actually on my side. It was kind of nice reading something where a judge is questioning my guilt. However, their decision is what matters so we will see what happens. I guess O.J. Simpson wasn't very lucky this time. It will be interesting to see how much time they give him.

I want to wish my dad a Happy Birthday this month, and I hope my daughters remembered their Mother's birthday too.

By any chance did anyone watch David Blaine hang upside down for days? Yeah, he does some crazy stuff, but I have to admit, he pushes the physical limitations of the body to the limit. He really is quite entertaining, and I'm curious what he going to do next.

Okay everyone, Don't forget Sarah McLachlan's new CD "Closer: the Best of Sarah McLachlan" is now available. I can't emphasize enough how good her music is but there's a saying that says music is the bridge between earth and heaven and believe me her music is unbelievable. I promise you will fall in love with her music.

Well everyone, try not to eat too much candy on Halloween, and I will leave you with my profound quote: "Let not your words exceed your deeds." (Abdul--Baha)

Until next month, take care and remember; The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love and light to all,

Michael

September 2008 Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to my monthly message for September 2008!

I can't believe September is here and almost gone but before I go on about anything else, I want to say I hope everyone watched the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing China. Because if you didn't, you not only missed out on one of the most beautiful events in the world, but you missed out on watching history in the making. There's no way I can describe the dedication, commitment, precision and discipline of the Chinese people during the Olympics but it was quite impressive and will probably be unmatched for decades to come. I know China has its mis-givings and deceptions with the government, but overall I truly believe they honored all the athletes from around the world and tried to show who they really are as a people. Needless to say, I watched it everyday and can't wait for the winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada in 2010 (my favorite country).

On a different note, I want to send a special thanks to Liz, Pam, Barbara and Phil, and my Mom for coming to visit with me. I always enjoy your visits, and I know what a sacrifice it is for everyone to take time out of your busy lives. Please know, even though it's a simple visit in a prison visiting room; I cherish every minute. Believe it or not , the visits truly remind me that people do care and have not forgotten about me. It may not seem like much but it helps me get through the moments when I think about giving up. So once again, thank you for your thoughtfulness and sacrifice!

Okay, the next subject I'm going to share is just a fascination I have with science because to me it truly is one of the last unexplored frontiers left. Also, bear with me because I'm trying to explain something that is not my field of expertise. It has to do with the large Hadron Collider at Europe's Cern facility that was turned on this month. The Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border is a machine that was built which will send a beam of atomic particles (mainly protons atoms) circling in opposite directions on a 17 mile wide loop 300 feet below the surface. When they line up two huge magnetic cores the atoms will collide at speeds close to the speed of light which in and of itself is unbelievable. But physicists hope the collisions reveal the particles responsible for the mass of all other particles. Basically, it's creating dark matter which already takes up 30% of the universe and we still don't fully know everything about dark matter, but ultimately we want to capture and control its energy. And I'm sure everyone can understand why. Also the miniature black holes that will spawn from these collisions are so small that they will dissipate in seconds and are too small to worry about according to Stephen Hawking.

Like I said earlier, I find science and space exploration along with the paranormal fascinating and look forward to the things we will learn from experiments such as the Hadron Collider. This probably explains my love for TV shows in the past like the K-Files and now the new show "Fringe" which seems to be pretty good so far when it comes to learning. My favorite is "Nova Science Now" on PBS.

Before I close, I know most of you reading this message pray for my release and that God's will be done in my life, and I appreciate that. Unfortunately, for some reason my body is breaking down. All of a sudden, I have damaged a tendon in my right foot, and I tore or damaged the tendon in my right elbow and now I have torn ligaments in my right knee. It's almost like Tom Brady, but I don't have the best sports doctors in the world nor, do I have a Victoria Secrets supermodel like Giselle to take care of me. So, could you all keep me in prayer for some Divine healing because I'll be honest, from my case, to my children, to my body falling apart I'm not sure how much more pain I can take.

No major movie recommendation this month unless you watch PBS. There is a movie called "Touching the Void" which is a true story about a man's survival after falling in the crevasse of a glacier in the mountains of Peru and having your hiking partner cut the rope and abandon you. Lets just say he learned who he really is and was given the ultimate test of forgiving someone. Sometimes I wonder If I will pass my test of forgiving a certain someone. Regardless, their weakness with indecision makes us stronger. I bet there are a list of you who have been tested with forgiving someone. How do you feel about your decision on whether or not to forgive?

My profound statement is: "To a scientist, uncertainty is a call of the wild." (Nova Science Now).

Until next month take care and remember; the key to mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love and light to all,

Michael

August 2008 Monthly Message

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:

Welcome to my Monthly Message for August 2008!

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Although, if you're like me and don't have air-conditioning, then you're probably not enjoying the uncomfortable nights when trying to sleep. My cell is designed exactly like a brick oven. Also, its been brutal trying to run in this heat. I usually run 3 miles five times a week but lately, I've cut back to running only three times a week. I love how good you feel after a run too. Hopefully, my body will hold up over time.

What's interesting here at OCCC, is they still have steel free weights out in the yard. You wouldn't think they would have so many serious weapons readily available around so many violent prisoners---but they do. So far, no one has injured anyone with the weights, and I think it's because guys in prison really look forward to "pumping iron" every day so they don't want to jeopardize that privilege. Another thing that's hard to believe is how strong some of these guys are. Heck, I thought i was pretty strong benching 260 lbs, and curling 115 lbs. but some guys literally laugh at that weight. I've watched individuals do sets of benching 400 lbs. which unless you actually see this up close you won't understand how impressive it is. Of course, there is a big cloud of ego in the weight pit too.

Okay, speaking of running and weight training this reminds me of a great time every four years. Yes, you guessed it, the summer Olympics and it's in Beijing China! I love watching the opening ceremonies and China has so much culture it will be nice to see what they have in store for us. I hope everyone is going to try and watch some of the events. In the swimming department I'm hoping Dara Torres wins a gold medal. She is a new mom who is forty-one years old and competing against women half her age. Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone compete in all the events and when it's finally over, though I will be sad , I know football will be starting the following week. Go Patriots!

Alright, now I want to get a little more serious for a moment. I don't know how many of you know who Randy Paush is but he died on the 25th of last month. He was fighting pancreatic cancer and was given 6 months to live. If you don't know who he is I suggest you view his most famous lecture called "The Last Lecture" and if that lecture doesn't bring a tear; you're not human. There was much I could relate to including his song (Time in a Bottle) by Jim Croce but there was so many other points as well. For example when he says the three most important words to know in life are "Tell the Truth" and he said if he could add three more it would be; "All the Time." Also he explains how he never found anger to make a situation better. And , for us to stop putting so much value in material things because the only thing that really matters in life is family and loving one another. There is so much more, and I wish I could share watching this lecture with my daughters. However, I implore each one of you reading this message to please take a moment out of your fast paced life and look it up on the Internet. I promise you will be changed on some level.

In court news at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, the first trial of a terrorist suspect connected with Osama Bin Laden is going on. Salim Hamdan, the former driver for Osama Bin Laden is facing charges that could land him in prison for life if found guilty. Of course, he was only a driver not a soldier but guess what the media won't tell (unless you watch Jim Lehrer or BBC). If, he is acquitted of all charges and found completely innocent, he still will remain in prison for life because he is considered an enemy combatant. Nice huh! You gotta love our justice system.

On a musical note, "The Best of Sarah McLachan" will be available October 7, 2008 and it will feature 16 tracks including "Possession," "I will Remember You" and "Building a Mystery." Sarah's music really is incredible, and I highly recommend this music CD. I hope my ex-wife has shared some of this music with my daughters because Sarah McLachlan's music really touches your soul in a peaceful way.

One last important issue, I want to wish Dick a Happy Birthday on the 20th of this month. Thank you so much for coming into my life and teaching me the power of friendship by showing true dedication, love and loyalty. You truly have been a blessing in my life, and I will be forever grateful.

My movie recommendation is: "Jumper," This film is a good action film and has an interesting twist, also. It has a few good actors such as Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson and Rachel Bilson. I sure wish I had this gift because I would jump right out of here.

My profound quote is: "Don't let grief become anger because it will never die." (Lost)

Until next month, take care and remember; "The key to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences.

Love & Light to all
Michael O'Laughlin

Federal Court of Appeals oral argument

I have just been informed that the Federal Court of Appeals has set the oral argument date for 9/12/08 at 9:30 am for Michael's case in front of this court. It's hard to believe a whole year has gone by already but it's true. Of course, all of this wouldn't be possible if it weren't for Dick's dedication to my cause. So, I owe him another big "thank you!"

July brings another very special time for me although it is bitter sweet. On July 13th, my youngest daughter will have her eleventh birthday! On the one hand it's awesome that my daughter is growing into a beautiful young lady and experiencing all the wonderful things life has to offer. The downside is, I cannot be there to share with her these memorable times in her life. For now, I can only hope that she knows I love her and miss her very much. Also, let me remind everyone again how important it is not to take your loved ones for granted. I don't think I could ever emphasize that enough but please don't make the same mistake I did. In the meantime, I will continue to work with the spiritual teachings I receive because they do help me accept my situation and ultimately learn that someday I will get my miracle.

Speaking of miracles, they are calling the rescue operation of 15 hostages in Colombia--a miracle. Ingrid Betancourt , the French/Colombian presidential candidate in 2002, has been a hostage along with many others, including three Americans one of which is from Cape Cod. I can't help but think they have been hostages almost as long as I've been incarcerated! That sure is a long time to be in captivity in the Colombian jungle by a crazy guerrilla group. Just think, if she had committed suicide like she wanted to, she wouldn't be enjoying her home coming. Let's keep the remaining 700+ hostages across Colombia in our prayers.

On a different note, our country is now 232 years old as of July 4th of this month. Since 1776, it seems as though Americans have struggled through wars and civil injustices to attain a simple but very important proclamation in the Declaration of Independence--that every person has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, the journey of our country has been tainted with some not so prominent moments such as: slavery, the abuse of Native Americans and the theft of their land, the burning of witches, to the more recent problems of universal health care, the Hurricane Katrina relief, to the controversies over water boarding, warrentless wiretapping and indefinite holding of prisoners in Guantanamo. However, even though our nation has always been far from perfect, I believe that God has raised up the United States and made it a land of opportunity and freedom. Also, regardless of the fact our justice system has failed me and many others, I still believe Americans have a true desire to be the best people they can be.

If you want to see the true integrity of an American first hand take a moment to observe our men and women of the armed forces. If you know someone who is serving in the military or is a veteran please make a special effort to show your appreciation. It takes a special soul to become a soldier and fight for your country. And, the next time you're at a fireworks show look to see how many are the color blue. The reason? Well, it takes barium to mix with other chemical elements to create the blue color so it becomes the most costly color and the most rare. Just a quick fun fact.

One last thing for this message. Between the heat and my becoming extremely sick while trying to write this message, I haven't been my usual heart-felt self so I apologize to all of you. I'm sure next month I'll feel a lot better.

My movie recommendation is: "Vantage Point" but to be honest it really wasn't that great. The reason I'm recommending the movie? There is an unbelievable amount of action and some pretty good stars including Dennis Quaid, Forrest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver, Matthew Fox and William Hurt. Unfortunately, I don't have much to choose from--we're not allowed R rated movies.

My quote this month is: "Some miracles have a price but that doesn't make them any less profound." (Smallville)

Until next month, take care and remember; "The answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences."

Love and light to all,
Michael

Michael's monthly message - June 2008

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:

Welcome to my monthly message for June 2008!

Well it seems there is never a dull moment out there with Mother Nature. Let's see, there was a major earthquake in China that left over 70 thousand dead, 19 thousand missing and 5 million homeless. There was an earthquake in Iceland where many were injured but nobody was killed. There was devastating tornados in Iowa and Kansas that left many dead and even more injured and homeless. And, in Burma a deadly cyclone left 78 thousand dead, 56 thousand missing and 2.4 million homeless, and I'm only scratching the surface. Gee, Sometimes I wonder what message Mother Nature is trying to tell us. But for now, we need to keep them all in prayer.

Alright, changing subjects. I don't know how many of you have had a close relationship with your Father, but regardless of how bad or how good, I hope you will remember them on June 15th this year. In case anyone forgot it's Father's day and life being so uncertain (as I mentioned in the opening paragraph) it's time to acknowledge your feelings with a nice card or phone call because you never know when it might be too late.

Personally, I never had a close relationship with my dad. However, one thing I learned after coming to prison was how much love he had for me while growing up and even now after my being in prison. Though most men have a hard time expressing their feelings, I've started to understand that a lot of us get caught up in the fast pace of the world and forget to enjoy or remember the little things or special moments we did share with our Fathers. Since I have had a lot of time to reflect on my life while being in prison, I've come to realize I did have some special moments in my life with my dad. From playing in the Father/Son golf tournaments, to him watching me score touchdowns at my high school football games, to important things like rushing me to the medical center when I severely cut my leg. Not to mention him rooting for me when I received my high school diploma, and I will never forget all the Patriots tickets so my buddy Dave and I could go to the games. There are many more, but my point is sometimes we can get caught up in what society depicts as a good father and forget to be grateful for the one we have. So, with that said, Happy Father's Day dad---I love you!

Of course, all this talk of Fathers leads me into the sad situation I find myself concerning my daughters. As time goes on the only memories they might have left of me will soon be gone. Especially, since I am no longer in their lives. Plus, they have a new step-dad to build solid memories with. So the old saying: "out of sight out of mind" applies pretty well.
I don't know how many of you watch the Ghost Whisperer on CBS Friday nights but the season finale brought tears to my eyes because she found out who her real Father was. The ghost of the man in prison happens to be her Father who was set up by the District Attorney. I can't explain the whole story but in the end she found out he was innocent and loved her very much, So, all she wanted to do was catch up on all she missed out. But it was one word that made the difference; she called him "dad" and in that moment nothing else mattered, and he was able to see the light and cross-over. It brought back memories of hearing my oldest daughter's first words: "dada." Yeah, I really miss being a dad and part of me is still upset that it was taken from me just to make a local District Attorney look good and appease a small town community. But I guess on some level I have to let that go and hope, I mean really hope, that my daughters will talk to me again someday. But if not, I want them to know: I will always love you guys with every part of my being.

Before I close concerning Fathers, I want to give a special note of appreciation to Dick Blanchard. His devotion to my cause has been one of a Father for his son and it means so much to me that he believes in my innocence and has devoted much of his life in raising awareness about my wrongful conviction. Dick, I am honored to have you as a friend in my life, and you will always have a special place in my heart. Though words will never do it justice, from the bottom of my heart---Thank you!

Speaking of thank you, I want to give a special thank you you to all of you who sacrificed your hard earned money and donated to my defense fund. We reached the goal for the second phase and the Private Investigator is hard at work with some good leads that may turn out to be very promising. This would not have been possible without all of you. So once again Thank you!
My movie recommendation might seem a little unusual but if you are open minded spiritually and would love to see a very entertaining movie with your sons and daughters or even grandsons and grand daughter, I recommend "The Golden Compass." It's a very well done movie with some great special effects and movie stars. It has Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Sam Elliot, the voice of Ian Kellen as the ice bear and a wonderfully talented young actress Dakota Blue. I promise your children or grandchildren who are 14 and under will love it. Matter of fact it would be an opportune time for Fathers to bond with their young daughters. Please take advantage of this recommendation.

My profound quote is: "Sometimes we don't see the results of when we do good things but that doesn't mean we should stop doing them." (My name is Earl).

Until next month, take care and remember; "the answers to the mysteries of life hide in the pain of our most difficult experiences."

Love and light to all,
Michael
